THE ALTOONA-JOHNSTOWN DIOCESE SAYS THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL MASS CELEBRATED AT THE CATHEDRAL OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IN ALTOONA THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH, AT NOON, IN HONOR OF THE RETIRING POPE BENEDICT.  ALL CATHOLICS IN THE AREA ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.  A DELEGATION FROM THE DIOCESE IS PLANNING A TRIP TO ITALY T HIS SUMMER AND MAY BE ABLE TO MEET THE NEW PONTIFF.

BEDFORD COUNTY STATE POLICE NOW SAY THAT A MAN FROM THE DETROIT AREA WHO DIED ON THE PROPERTY OF THE COUNTY’S HISTORICAL SOCIETY COMMITTED SUICIDE.  HIS BODY WAS FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF A SILO. HE HAD APPARENTLY ATTENDED THE PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION, THEN GOT OFF A GREYHOUND BUS IN BEDFORD.

NO WORD YET ON WHY, BUT THREE MEMBERS OF THE JOHNSTOWN REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ARE ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE.  THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT HAS REPORTED THAT RON REPAK, DEBBIE WALTER AND LISA WIRFEL WERE PUT ON LEAVE AND ARE NOT ALLOWED ON CITY PROPERTY. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RON REPAK HAS WORKED AT THE REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS.

STATE POLICE IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY ARE INVESTIGATING A BURGLARY AT THE MOOSE LODGE IN MORRIS TOWNSHIP.  BETWEEN LATE SUNDAY NIGHT AND EARLY MONDAY MORNING, SOMEONE BROKE INTO THE SAFE AND STOLE MORE THAN 5-THOUSAND DOLLARS.   THE SURVEILLANCE CAMERA WAS BROKEN AND THE VIDEO RECORDING SYSTEM WAS TAKEN AS WELL.

52 YEAR OLD MARK WENDT OF NEWRY ALLEGEDLY FIRED A GUNSHOT INTO THE HOME WHERE HIS ESTRANGED WIFE WAS WITH HER BROTHER…THEN HE WAS INVOLVED IN A POLICE STANDOFF AT HIS HOME FOR 9 HOURS EARLY SUNDAY MORNING…NOW HE’S OUT OF THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON.  WENDT POSTED BAIL YESTERDAY AND IS DUE AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING NEXT WEEK.   NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE INCIDENT.

SUE PATERNO APPEARED ON KATIE COURIC’S SYNDICATED DAYTIME TALK SHOW YESTERDAY TO TALK ABOUT THE PATERNO FAMILY’S INVESTIGATION INTO THE FREEH REPORT.   JOE PATERNO’S WIDOW SAID SHE GOT PHYSICALLY SICK WHEN SHE HEARD ABOUT THE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST JERRY SANDUSKY.  SHE WAS ALSO SHOCKED THAT THE FREEH REPORT BLAMED PATERNO AND OTHER HIGH RANKING PENN STATE OFFICIALS FOR COVERING UP THE ABUSE.  FORMER PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER…FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ…AND FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY ARE CURRENTLY AWAITING TRIAL.

NOW THAT THE PATERNO FAMILY’S REPORT IS OUT, PENN STATE TRUSTEE ALVIN CLEMENS SAYS THE BOARD SHOULD TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT THE CONCLUSIONS IN THE FREEH REPORT.   CLEMENS THINKS THE PATERNO FAMILY’S ANALYSIS “RAISES A NUMBER OF EXTREMELY SERIOUS AND TROUBLING QUESTIONS” ABOUT THE FREEH REPORT, WHICH CONCLUDED THAT JOE PATERNO HELPED COVER UP JERRY SANDUSKY’S ABUSE OF CHILDREN.  NO COMMENT FROM PENN STATE OFFICIALS.

LAWYER KENNETH FEINBERG TELLS THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES THAT PENN STATE HAS RECEIVED SETTLEMENT OFFERS FROM ABOUT 25 MEN WHO CLAIM THEY WERE ABUSED BY JERRY SANDUSKY.   FEINBERG…WHO IS OVERSEEING THE NEGOTIATIONS… DECLINED TO GIVE ANY SPECIFICS.   THE UNIVERSITY IS HOPING TO SETTLE THE CASES BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
