POPE BENEDICT IS STEPPING DOWN.  BENEDICT WILL RESIGN AS LEADER OF THE WORLD'S ONE-BILLION ROMAN CATHOLICS ON FEBRUARY 28TH.  IN A STATEMENT, THE 85-YEAR-OLD GERMAN-BORN PONTIFF SAYS HE'S RESIGNING BECAUSE HIS HEALTH IS DETERIORATING.  BENEDICT WILL BE THE FIRST POPE TO RESIGN IN NEARLY 600 YEARS.

JOHNSTOWN POLICE RECOVERED SEVERAL BUNDLES OF HEROIN SATURDAY AFTER SHOTS WERE FIRED ON CYPRESS AVENUE. 2 GROUPS OF BLACK MALES WERE REPORTEDLY INVOLVED IN A RUNNING GUNBATTLE AROUND 2:45PM.
POLICE LATER HEARD AT LEAST 15 TO 20 SHOTS FIRED ON CENTRAL AVENUE, BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED.  THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING.

A POLICE STANDOFF ENDED PEACEFULLY IN NEWRY, BLAIR COUNTY, SUNDAY MORNING.  ABOUT 1:30AM, 52 YEAR OLD MARK WENDT OF NEWRY ARGUED WITH HIS ESTRANGED WIFE, THEN FIRED A GUN INTO THE HOUSE SHE WAS INSIDE ALONG WITH HER BROTHER.  THE STATE POLICE SPECIAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM WENT TO WENDT’S HOME ON HELEN STREET NEAR CATFISH ROAD, BUT HE REFUSED TO COME OUT UNTIL ABOUT 10:30.  NO ONE WAS INJURED AND WENDT IS CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND FIRING A WEAPON INTO AN OCCUPIED STRUCTURE.

IN SOMERSET COUNTY FIRE CREWS BATTLED A FIRE SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT A HOME IN HOOVERSVILLE.   IT STARTED ON SOMERSET STREET.  THERE IS NO WORD YET ON A CAUSE.  A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL WILL BE INVESTIGATING.  EVERYONE GOT OUT OK, BUT THERE WERE PETS INSIDE.

IN  CLEARFIELD COUNTY … FIRE HAS DESTROYED THREE BUSINESSES. IT STARTED LATE SATURDAY NIGHT ON THIRD STREET, DESTROYING “ETHAN’S CAFÉ,” “THE ANGRY BEAN” AND THREE APARTMENTS ABOVE.  IT ALSO DAMAGED A SECOND BUILDING THAT HOUSED A PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO AND ONE APARTMENT.  NO WORD YET ON A CAUSE.

A CAMBRIA COUNTY FAMILY IS HOMELESS AFTER A FIRE SUNDAY NIGHT.  

THE BLAZE…SPARKED BY A COAL FURNACE…BROKE OUT ABOUT 7PM AT 1098 PURITAN ROAD IN PORTAGE AND THE HOUSE IS A TOTAL LOSS, BUT IT WAS INSURED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES.   SHEILA WILLIAMS AND HER CHILDREN ARE BEING ASSISTED BY THE RED CROSS.

GROUNDBREAKING IS SCHEDULED THIS SUMMER FOR A VISITOR CENTER, PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, AND OTHER IMPROVEMENTS AT THE FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL MEMORIAL NEAR SHANKSVILLE.  NATIONAL PARK SERVICE OFFICIALS TOLD THE FLIGHT 93 ADVISORY COMMISSION SATURDAY THAT FINAL DOCUMENTS WILL BE READY FOR CONTRACTING NO LATER THAN MARCH 19TH.   THE PROJECT TOTALS 20 MILLION DOLLARS.  THE FINAL PHASE TO BE COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER 2016 WILL BE THE 93-FOOT TOWER OF VOICES CONTAINING 40 WIND CHIMES.

THE FAMILY OF JOE PATERNO CALLS THE FREEH REPORT A PROFOUND FAILURE.  U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL DICK THORNBURGH IS AMONG THE PANEL OF CONSULTANTS ADVISING THE FAMILY OF THE LATE PENN STATE FOOTBALL COACH.  THE PATERNOS ISSUED THEIR OWN REPORT SUNDAY DENOUNCING THE FINDINGS OF THE 237-PAGE REPORT THAT IMPLICATED JOE-PA IN A COVER-UP OF THE JERRY SANDUSKY SEX-ABUSE SCANDAL.

THE FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL IS INCHING CLOSER TO ITS FUNDRAISING GOAL.  ANOTHER ONE-POINT-TWO-MILLION DOLLARS COLLECTED DURING THE FIST QUARTER OF THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR PUSHED THE FUND'S TOTAL COLLECTED REVENUE OVER THE 30-MILLION-DOLLAR MARK.
