SOME RESIDENTS IN AND NEAR ADDISON TOWNSHIP, SOMERSET COUNTY WAS WITHOUT POWER LAST NIGHT, BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER.  AT ABOUT 7 PM THE POWER WENT OUT,  POWER WAS RESTORED ABOUT 9:30 LAST NIGHT.

THE FIRE THAT TOOK THE LIFE OF A JOHNSTOWN WOMAN AT THE OAKHURST HOMES ON SUNDAY WAS ACCIDENTAL … AND STARTED IN THE LIVING ROOM. THAT’S ACCORDING TO THE JOHNSTOWN FIRE CHIEF WHO IDENTIFIED THE VICTIM AS 26 YEAR OLD CHRYSTAL THOMAS.  SHE DIED OF SMOKE INHALATION.

BLAIR COUNTY CORONER PATTY ROSS SAYS THE COUPLE WHO DIED IN A WRECK YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WAS CELEBRATING THEIR 63RD WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND THE MAN HAD HEALTH PROBLEMS.  HE WAS SPEEDING ALONG 31ST STREET WHEN HE FAILED TO STOP AT THE STOP SIGN AT UNION AVENUE. HIS CAR BROADSIDED A PICKUP TRUCK OCCUPIED BY 2 MALES.  THE IMPACT FORCED THE VEHICLES INTO A CONCRETE BRIDGE BARRIER. THE MAN AND HIS WIFE, BOTH IN THEIR 80’S, WERE KILLED. THE PEOPLE IN THE TRUCK WERE ADMITTED TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER WITH NON-LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES.

WE COULD LOSE PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE IN JOHNSTOWN AND ALTOONA.  THE STATE MUST DECIDE BY OCTOBER IF IT WANTS TO CONTINUE TO PAY AMTRAK ABOUT 5.7 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO MAINTAIN THE “PENNSYLVANIAN” -- A SERVICE THAT RUNS THROUGH PITTSBURGH TO HARRISBURG WITH STOPS IN ALTOONA AND JOHNSTOWN.

IN WESTMORELAND  COUNTY, THE PLUM CORPORATION WORKER KILLED IN AN INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENT MONDAY HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 60-YEAR-OLD RICHARD LICINA, JUNIOR.  LICINA WAS USING AN OVERHEAD CRANE TO MOVE A TEN THOUSAND POUND STEEL COIL WHEN A SMALLER FIVE THOUSAND POUND COIL SLIPPED OUT OF PLACE AND STRUCK HIM IN THE CHEST.  HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE SHORTLY BEFORE ELEVEN O'CLOCK.  OSHA IS ASSISTING IN THE STATE POLICE INVESTIGATION.

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR 37 YEAR OLD MICHAEL MOORE OF SOMERSET WHO IS ACCUSED OF DRAGGING HIS FRIEND’S 350 POUND BODY INTO HIS PICKUP TRUCK, THEN PARKING IT ON A SOMERSET STREET.  THE BODY OF 53 YEAR OLD FRANKIE SASS OF FRIEDENS WAS FOUND LATE LAST MONTH, A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER HE DIED IN MOORE’S APARTMENT.   

STATE POLICE SAY 2 OTHER PEOPLE HELPED AND THEY COULD ALSO FACE CHARGES.

PENN STATE’S COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATIONS HAS ANNOUNCED THE “PAT BOLAND MEMORIAL INTERNSHIP AWARD” HAS SURPASSED THE $20,000 MARK AND IS NOW OFFICIALLY FUNDED BY THE UNIVERSITY. SOON, THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE AWARD WILL BE ANNOUNCED.  CREATED BY SARA GANIM, NOW A CNN CORRESPONDENT, AND GARY SINDERSON, FROM WJAC-TV, THE SCHOLARSHIP BEGAN FUNDRAISING ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO IN THE WAKE OF PAT’S PASSING.  THE AWARD MONEY WAS RAISED THROUGH A SERIES OF FUNDRAISERS INCLUDING FOREVER BROADCASTING-LED FUNDRAISERS WHERE PAT REPORTED ON NEWS AND SPORTS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. PAT GREW UP IN THE JOHNSTOWN AREA.

YOUNGSTOWN OHIO CATHOLIC BISHOP GEORGE MURRY HAS WRITTEN LETTERS TO ABOUT 12-HUNDRED ADULTS WHO ATTENDED JOHN F. KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL IN WARREN FROM 1985 THROUGH 1992 WHILE FRANCISCAN FRIAR STEPHEN BAKER TAUGHT AND COACHED THERE.  HE’S HOPING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT ALLEGED SEXUAL ABUSE BY BAKER WHO KILLED HIMSELF LAST MONTH AT ST. BERNADINE’S MONSTERY IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. HE HAD PREVIOUSLY SETTLED WITH 11 MEN WHO CLAIMED HE MOLESTED THEM. DOZENS OF OTHER POSSIBLE VICTIMS HAVE COME FORWARD SINCE THEN, INCLUDING SOME FORMER STUDENTS AT JOHNSTOWN’S BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL.
