IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY … TWO PEOPLE FROM CURWENSVILLE DIED IN A FIRE AT A MOBILE HOME ALONG SKINNER ROAD IN PIKE TOWNSHIP.  THE VICTIMS WERE IDENTIFIED AS 61 YEAR OLD RANDALL PETERS AND 59 YEAR OLD DEBORAH PETERS.  BOTH WERE UNABLE TO ESCAPE THE BURNING HOME.  THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED.

TWO LAUREL HIGHLANDS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE RECOVERING FROM MINOR INJURIES THEY SUFFERED WHEN THEIR SCHOOL BUS WAS HIT.  THE BUS WAS STRUCK BY AN S-U-V TUESDAY AFTERNOON ON NORTH GALLATIN AVENUE.  THE INJURED STUDENTS WERE TAKEN TO UNIONTOWN HOSPITAL FOR EVALUATION.  THE REMAINING STUDENTS WERE TAKEN TO THEIR BUS STOPS.

PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS ARE CLOSE TO BEING FINALIZED IN FAYETTE COUNTY.  COMMISSIONERS SIGNED OFF THIS WEEK ON THE FIRST POSTING OF RESULTS.  CANDIDATES WISHING TO CHALLENGE THE RESULTS OR SCHEDULE A HEARING HAVE UNTIL FIVE O'CLOCK MONDAY TO DO SO.  SEVERAL COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATES WILL APPEAR ON BOTH BALLOTS THIS FALL BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF WRITE-INS THEY RECEIVED.

AN UNUSUAL ROBBERY IS UNDER INVESTIGATION IN CAMBRIA COUNTY. POLICE SAY A PORTAGE MAN WAS MEETING A WOMAN THAT HE MET ONLINE AT A LOCATION IN READE TOWNSHIP … WHEN AN UNKNOWN MAN APPROACHED HIM AND DEMANDED MONEY.  THE MAN GOT AWAY WITH JUST A FEW DOLLARS AND THE SUSPECT WAS ABLE TO RUN AWAY AND CALL 9-1-1.   ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS URGED TO CALL POLICE.

IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THE U-S-S SOMERSET WILL BE COMMISSIONED SOMETIME NEXT YEAR.  AT THE QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE FAMILIES OF FLIGHT 93, GROUP PRESIDENT GORDON FELT SAID THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FINAL DECISION ON THE COMMISSIONING.  FAMILIES WERE ASKED TO CONTRIBUTE A QUILT SQUARE, PICTURES, AND MEMENTOS OF THEIR LOVED ONES WHO PERISHED ON FLIGHT 93 ON SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2001.  THE GROUP SENT A LETTER TO THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY REQUESTING THE U-S-S SOMERSET BE COMMISSIONED OUT OF PHILADELPHIA.

A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE HAS SENTENCED 21 YEAR OLD CARDELL CLINTON TO 6 TO 23 MONTHS IN THE COUNTY JAIL.  LAST JUNE, HE AND HAYWARD GAINES WENT TO A KERNVILLE COUPLE’S HOME AND TRIED TO EXTORT MONEY. 2 NIGHTS LATER, CLINTON WAS SHOT AND WOUNDED OUTSIDE EDDER’S DEN BAR BY SHYTYQUON LAWTON.  CLINTON WAS LOADED INTO A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY ELIP CHEATHAM AND HE ALLEGEDLY DID NOT FOLLOW POLICE ORDERS TO STOP, BUT DROVE TOWARD OFFICERS AT A HIGH SPEED. 3 COPS FIRED AT THE VEHICLE, KILLING CHEATHAM AND GRAZING GAINES’ LEG.  THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE DETERMINED THAT THE OFFICERS USED JUSTIFIABLE FORCE.  LAWTON WILL SERVE 3 TO 7 YEARS IN PRISON AND GAINES WAS SENTENCED TO 3 TO 8 YEARS.

BLAIR COUNTY COMPLETED THE 16-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLAR SALE OF VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME ON FRIDAY…AND NOW COMMISSIONERS SAY 12 EMPLOYEES HAVE DECIDED TO RETIRE.  RELIANT SENIOR CARE OF PHILADELPHIA OFFERED TO THE REMAINING 248 HEALTH CARE WORKERS AND 97-PERCENT ACCEPTED. 7 CHOSE TO LEAVE.
