THERE WAS ANOTHER DRUG AND CRIME COMMISSION MEETING LAST NIGHT IN JOHNSTOWN – THE LATEST IN A SERIES OF SUCH MEETINGS THROUGHOUT THE CITY.  LAST NIGHT’S MEETING WAS AT THE PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING DOWNTOWN.  THE COMMISSION WILL PRESENT THEIR FINAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL BY JUNE 30TH.

IN SOMERSET COUNTY, A MINER WORKING AT QUE CREEK NUMBER ONE MINE IN LINCOLN TOWNSHIP WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH HIS LEG WAS BROKEN.  A DEVICE ACCIDENTALLY ACCELERATED AND STRUCK THE MAN.  RESCUE WORKERS REMOVED HIM FROM THE MINE AND TRANSPORTED HIM TO THE HOSPITAL.  HE IS EXPECTED TO BE OK.

THE BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HAVE VOTED 2 TO 1 TO APPROVE THE SALE OF THE VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME TO RELIANT SENIOR CARE FOR 16 MILLION DOLLARS.

THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU SAYS JOHNSTOWN’S POPULATION IS DROPPING AT A FASTER PACE THAN ALMOST ANY OTHER METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREA IN THE UNITED STATES.  ACCORDING TO THE NEW FIGURES, CAMBRIA COUNTY SUFFERED AN ESTIMATED 7-TENTHS OF A PERCENT POPULATION DROP DURING A 12-MONTH PERIOD THAT ENDED ON JULY 1ST. THE LOSS WAS TIED FOR 5TH-SHARPEST, AMONG THE NATION’S 381 AREAS, WITH EAST STROUDSBURG AND BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.  THE 4 CITIES ON THE FASTEST DECLINE WERE PINE BLUFF ARKANSAS…JOPLIN MISSOURI…FLINT MICHIGAN, AND DANVILLE ILLINOIS.  APPROXIMATELY 190-THOUSAND PEOPLE LIVED IN CAMBRIA COUNTY WHEN THE 1977 FLOOD HIT. THE NUMBER IS DOWN TO 141-THOUSAND-584.

BLAIR COUNTY PROSECUTORS WILL SEEK LONG MANDATORY SENTENCES TODAY AGAINST JERMAINE SAMUEL WHO WAS CONVICTED ON 10 DRUG-RELATED OFFENSES. POLICE SAY HE WAS ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE DRUG RING SELLING COCAINE FROM THE CORNER BAR & GRILL IN ALTOONA IN 2010 AND 11.

TOMORROW IS OPENING DAY OF TROUT SEASON.  YOU CAN TOSS YOUR LINE IN THE WATER AT 8AM…THEN THE SEASON IS OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY.   MINIMUM SIZE IS 7 INCHES.   IN ADDITION TO A FISHING LICENSE, TROUT ANGLERS 16 AND OLDER MUST HAVE A TROUT/SALMON STAMP TO FISH FOR TROUT.
