PATIENTS TREATED DIFFERENTLY BASED ON WEIGHT

A study found that hospital doctors’ bedside manners change based on a patient’s weight.  Specifically, docs were found to be nicer to thin patients and to have less of an “emotional rapport” with heavier ones.  The study didn’t reveal any difference in medical advice, diagnosis or quality of treatment between fat and thin patients, but experts worry that doctors’ lack of empathy and respect for heavier patients could reduce the effectiveness of health guidance, since patients who don’t receive empathy from their doctors may be less likely to follow their advice.
