This school year, some students are getting an extra economics lesson- from their parents! The debate over whether it’s cool to bribe your kids to get good grades is firing up again. Some parents make no qualms about offering their children cold, hard cash in exchange for As or improved grades. Others go for gifts and outings instead of money, but the effect is the same. Then again, still others are against the practice entirely, citing research that suggests it doesn’t work in the long run. Critics of grade-bribing say it fails to foster a love of learning. But supporters claim it jump-starts kids’ motivation and in some ways even prepares them for the real world.
