It’s the middle of January (or #Gymuary). Have you stuck to your New Year’s resolution to lose weight? A new study from the University of South Carolina shows that using Twitter as a support network can help people shed extra LBs.
Researchers divided 96 obese men and women into two groups, with the first having access to informational podcasts about weight loss. The other group received the podcasts plus mobile apps for Twitter to tweet about their progress. After monitoring both groups for six months, those with the apps lost 0.5 percent more weight than the group with just the podcasts alone.
“Those who were engaged with Twitter lost more weight,” says lead researcher Brie Turner-McGrievy, Ph.D. Turner-McGrievy said using Twitter allowed participants to "post multiple, brief messages each day, and have the choice to be anonymous." (Women's Health)
