WALMART WANTS CUSTOMERS TO MAKE DELIVERIES
Walmart is considering a new delivery plan that involves store customers delivering packages to online buyers. The company hopes to gain an edge over Amazon.com by shipping online orders directly from stores to cut transportation costs. Walmart currently uses carriers like FedEx, but they are exploring the possibility of “crowd sourcing.” Joel Anderson, chief executive of Walmart.com, explained that the plan would involve some shoppers telling the retailer where they live and signing up to drop off packages for online customers who live on their route back home. Walmart would offer a discount on the customers’ shopping bill, effectively covering the cost of their gas in return for the delivery of packages. So far, the idea is just in its brainstorming stage.
