The Average US Car Is Over a Decade Old

Owned the same car for a long, long time? You’re in plenty of good company, judging by a new study released by IHS Automotive and its Polk subsidiary.

At the start of 2014, the average age of all light vehicles and trucks buzzing around the country was 11.4 years old.

If that figure sounds familiar, it’s because that’s the exact average age of cars from one year earlier.

Don’t expect things to change much over the next few years even as the automotive industry has bounced back nicely from the doldrums of the Great Recession.

As it happens, car owners are deciding to hold on to their wheels, mostly because they’re built to last longer.

Mix in new vehicles with the old ones and it’s no wonder the roads are jammed. Last year, for instance, 252.7 million cars were in operation, an increase of 1.5 percent from 2012.
