FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY GOODBYE TO JAMES GANDOLFINI
Funeral services were held yesterday for James Gandolfini at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The actor was remembered during the 90-minute service by his wife Deborah Lin Gandolfini, The Sopranos’ creator David Chase and family friends Thomas Richardson and Susan Aston. Chase’s eulogy was reportedly in the form of a letter, that started “Dear Jimmy.” “You were a good boy… a sad boy, amazed and confused. You could see it in your eyes. That’s why you were a great actor,” said Chase, who added that Gandolfini once told him. “You know what I want to be? A man. That’s all. I want to be a man.” Mourners at the funeral included Gandolfini’s Sopranos wife Edie Falco, as well as co-stars Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Michael Imperioli, Dominic Chianese, Joe Pantoliano, Steve Buscemi, Steve Schrippa and Aida Turturro. Also spotted entering the church was The Good Wife’s Julianna Margulies, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The New York Post reports that HBO planned and paid for the entire funeral, and was filming it for the actor’s family. On Wednesday, the network released a statement from the family, “expressing their thanks for the outpouring of good wishes and support over the past week.” They asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, which “James was very passionate about and supported in countless ways.” Gandolfini, 51, died of a heart attack in Rome June 19th.
DEEN LOSES MORE ENDORSEMENTS
Paula Deen has lost even more endorsement deals in the wake of her recent scandal. Diabetes drug maker Novo Nordisk announced yesterday they dropped Deen as a spokesperson. A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk told TMZ they are parting ways with Paula for now, “while she takes time to focus her attention where it is needed.” Also dropping Paula yesterday was Target, which announced they’ve decided to, “phase out the Paula Deen merchandise in our stores as well as on Target.com.” The company will not be replenishing their inventory once items sell out. Meanwhile, QVC decided to “take a pause” on working with Deen. He does, however, acknowledge that “people deserve second chances,” hinting that their stance may change in the future.
MARTHA ON DEEN
Meanwhile, Martha Stewart revealed on Watch What Happens Live Wednesday that she has sympathy for Paula Deen. "I feel sorry for Paula Deen," said the 71-year-old Stewart. "She's a public figure. And I know you have to be extremely careful being a public figure." Asked whether she agreed with the reaction Paula’s gotten from the public and her sponsors, Stewart was very careful in her answer. “I don't want to say whether I agree or not. I just feel you have to really watch yourself especially in this day and age, with cameras all over you and Google,” she said, adding, “What I just said….It'll be there forever." And Stewart refused to chime in on whether the Food Network was right to drop Deen, telling host Andy Cohen, “no comment.”
