TODAY WAS TORTURE FOR CURRY
The behind-the-scenes Today show dirt just never seems to end. This Sunday’s New York Times Magazine prints an excerpt from the upcoming book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, by reporter Brian Stelter, which delves into the back-stabbing that took place regarding Ann Curry’s ouster. According to the article, Curry got the hosting job when Meredith Vieira left in 2011 because producers were worried Matt Lauer planned to leave too and they’d be left without a familiar face. Said a source, “It might have sounded like a paranoid chain reaction, but it was also a terrifying possibility…Curry had to stay in case Lauer didn’t.” But an insider said Curry was a disaster from the beginning and it got so bad, the staff often made fun of her. Executive producer Jim Bell had a blooper reel made of Ann’s worst on-air mistakes, her belongings were hidden in a coat closet, and, a source says, “A lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann's outfit choices or just generally messing with her.” Eventually, they realized Ann had to go, and Bell personally concocted a plan to oust her, which was allegedly called “Operation Bambi.” Stelter writes that Curry remains "profoundly hurt and humiliated" by what happened on Today, adding, "she told friends that her final months were a form of professional torture."

Robin Roberts suffered a health setback while vacationing in Florida, but is expected back at Good Morning America next week. "Last week, in the middle of my Key West vacation, I began not to feel well. Nothing serious, just under the weather. I contacted my doctors and flew back to NYC. They felt it best to admit me into the hospital for a few days," Roberts said Thursday in a post on Facebook. "Seems my young immune system needed a little boost to fight off 'opportunistic infections.' My doctors assured me that this was NOT because I was working or doing too much, too soon.
