A FULL HOUSE AT THE BLAIR COUNTY CONVENTION CENTER LAST NIGHT AS The public learnED more ABOUT THE UPCOMING BLAIR COUNTY PROPERTY TAX REASSESSMENT. Many people ARE CONCERNED THAT THEIR taxes will go up, BUT the company DOING THE WORK SAYS the county can’t use thE process to make money. Blair County hasN’T DONE A REASSESSMENT SINCE 1958. AFTER IT’S FINISHED, ABOUT a third of people will pay more, a third will pay less, and a third will stay the same. SIMILAR meetings WILL BE HELD in every school district in the county.
ALTOONA APARTMENT FIRE
A MALFUNCTIONING STOVE IS BLAMED FOR An apartment fire THAT BROKE OUT around 5:30 TUESDAY MORNING AT 524 5th Avenue IN ALTOONA. FIREFIGHTERS were able to keep the fLAMES contained to the KITCHEN OF THE first floor apartment. OTHER RESIDENTS HEARD THE SMOKE ALARMS AND EVACUATED. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.
Hearing postponed FOR ACCUSED KILLER
a preliminary hearing has been continued UNTIL JULY 31ST for 25 year old denver blough of windber who is accused of killing his girlfriend, 23 year old caressa kovalcik, may 31st at their apartment on 19th Street. Kovalcik was taken to johnstown’s memorial medical center where she died shortly after an emergency c-section. The baby…WHICH WAS JUST 2 WEEKS FROM TERM… was flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. she is REPORTEDLY still in CRITICAL CONDITION. the couple also had an 11-month-old son.
GovERNOR Tom Corbett says he has read a report from the state attorney general's office on the handling of the Jerry Sandusky case, BUT HE won't comment until it is released publicly. Attorney general KATHLEEN KANE's office says certain people discussed in The report are being given the opportunity to read it and respond in writing. during her 2012 campaign, Kane questioned why it took nearly 3 years for charges to be filed against Sandusky. The investigation began while Corbett was still attorney general.
A STATE SENATE COMMITTEE YESTERDAY PASSED LEGISLATION THAT WOULD REDUCE THE SIZE OF Penn State’s board of trustees FROM 30 VOTING MEMBERS TO 23. THE MEASURE would REMOVE the university’s president, the governor, and a state secretary off the panel altogether. IT NOW moveS to the full Senate for consideration. IN A STATEMENT, Penn State urged the legislature to wait on reform recommendations from the board’s governance committee before pursuing the law.
HIRING FREEZE AT PRISONS
AS COST SAVING MEASURE, The state has instituted a hiring freeze at Pennsylvania's prisons, and the corrections officers' union says the CORBETT administration is risking the officers' safety if it GOES on FOR LONG. Corrections SECRETARY John Wetzel SAYS THE FREEZE BEGAN May 27TH AND IS SLATED TO RUN until at least July 1ST. Roy Pinto, president of the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, saY prison staffing is at the 2008 level, AND there are 5-THOUSAND more inmates.

THE GAME COMMISSION THINKS THERE ARE TOO MANY DEER…SO THEY WILL OFFER AN EXTRA 13 THOUSAND DOE PERMITS THIS SEASON IN BLAIR, BEDFORD, AND PARTS OF SOME NEIGHORING COUNTIES. THEY ARE ALSO HOPING TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE. APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE JULY 14TH.
WEST NILE SPRAYING
mosquitoes have tested positive for west nile virus in CENTRE COUNTY. AUTHORITIES say TRUCK-MOUNTED SPRAYING IS PLANNED IN parts of Rush Township TOday in hopes of reducing the adult mosquito population. in case of too much rain, spraying will be postponed until tomorrow.
Western Pennsylvania gas prices dipped slightly, averaging $3.80 a gallon this week, according to triple A FUEL GAUGE. The national average for regular unleaded is $3.65. This time last year, consumers were paying 2 cents less at the pump and the national average was beginning to trend downward toward the summer low of $3.47. MOST ALTOONA DRIVERS ARE FILLING UP FOR $3.75.
penn state senior ross holland is setting a world record for the longest wheelie in a wheelchair. he’s already been doing a wheelie at the hub for almost 40 hours, starting on monday. the previous record was just 10 hours and holland is going for 72 hours. ross has BEEN IN A CHAIR MOST OF HIS LIFE.
STUDENTS CLEANING UP ALTOONA
50 ALTOONA AREA HIGH SCHOOL teachers and more than 600 students in grades 10 through 12 will volunteer more than a combined 3-THOUSAND hours to help “Tune-up” Altoona parks and streets.WEATHER PERMITTING, FROM 9am TO 2pm, THEY will be painting, pulling weeds, picking up trash at 20 locations. Students WILL BE WEARING A maroon AND white shirt.
