HAZING BLAMED FOR STUDENT’S SUICIDE
Penn State Altoona’s Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity has been suspended following the suicide of 18 year old freshman marquise braham. based on photos and notes on his phone, his family believes marquise had been hazed off-campus and he jumped from the roof of a hotel in long island over spring break. one photo shows a young man blindfolded with someone pointing a gun to his head. there are also messages about the use of the drug
m-d-m-a within the fraternity. Chancellor Lori Bechtel-Wherry says an investigation is underway by logan township police.
TEENAGER KILLED IN ACCIDENT
ALTOONA POLICE SAY A TEENAGER DIED YESTERDAY WHEN A CAR FELL ON HIM. THE BOY WAS WORKING ON THE VEHICLE ON WALTON AVENUE. HIS NAME AND AGE HAVE NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.
KILLER LOSES APPEAL
THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT SEAN ALLEN OF THE HOLLIDAYSBURG HAS LOST ANOTHER ROUND OF APPEALS. HE’S SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE FOR THE 2010 STRANGULATION DEATH OF 19 YEAR OLD PENN STATE ALTOONA STUDENT MAGGIE DAVIS. HER BODY WAS FOUND IN THE TRUNK OF HER CAR NEAR ALLEN’S HOLLIDAYSBURG-AREA APARTMENT. A 3-JUDGE PANEL OF THE STATE SUPERIOR COURT REJECTED ARGUMENTS THAT ALLEN’S ATTORNEYS HAD BEEN INEFFECTIVE.
SHOOTER WILL STAND TRIAL
A BLAIR COUNTY DISTRICT JUDGE YESTERDAY ORDERED 56 YEAR OLD JAMES PETTY OF ALTOONA TO STAND TRIAL ON ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE AND OTHER CHARGES. POLICE SAY HE FIRED A SHOTGUN AT A COUPLE AS THEY FLED FROM HIS CRAWFORD AVENUE HOME ON MARCH 1ST. A BLAST HIT A NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE, BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE JUDGE REDUCED BAIL FROM 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH TO 10-PERCENT OF THAT AMOUNT.
STUDENTS CHARGED WITH ARSON
2 PENN STATE RUGBY PLAYERS ARE FACING MULTIPLE FELONY COUNTS FOR THE FIRE THAT DESTROYED the team’s storage shed at a house party last month. POLICE TELL THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES THAT 21 YEAR OLD SEAN HERBERT AND 22 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER PETTY STARTED THE BLAZE ON JANUARY 14TH. Both Are FREE on unsecured bail WITH Preliminary hearings scheduled WEDNESDAY.
DOCTOR’S OFFICES RAIDED
AGENTS FROM the IRS, THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, and the FBI YESTERDAY RAIDED THE ALTOONA OFFICE OF Dr. John Johnson. employees WERE ORDERED to step back from their computers and put their hands up. Johnson Is a pain management doctor AND HE PREVIOUSLY faced charges dealing with taxes.
MAKING UP SNOW DAYS
THE STATE SENATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED A BILL YESTERDAY THAT WOULD GIVE SCHOOLS MORE FLEXIBILITY TO MAKE UP MISSED TIME DUE TO THE BAD WINTER. SCHOOLS CAN CALCULATE THE ACADEMIC YEAR ON AN HOURLY, RATHER THAN DAILY BASIS. THEY CAN ALSO CHOOSE TO HOLD CLASSES ON ONE SATURDAY PER MONTH. The Penns Valley Area school board IN CENTRE COUNTY HAS ALREADY voted to extend class days starting March 31 by 30 minutes to make up for 7 weather-related days off. CLASSES WILL START 7 MINUTES EARLY…AND END 23 MINUTES LATER.
