SNOW BLAMED FOR PILE-UP

WINTRY WEATHER CAUSED A 9-VEHICLE PILE-UP THURSDAY MORNING ALONG INTERSTATE 80 NEAR THE KYLERTOWN EXIT IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY A TRACTORTRAILER WAS GOING TOO FAST AND COULDN’T SLOW DOWN ON A HILL. THE DRIVER SWERVED INTO THE LEFT LANE, HITTING 5 OTHER RIGS AND A COUPLE OF CARS. 3 PEOPLE WERE INJURED, BUT ARE EXPECTED TO BE OK. ANOTHER MULTI-VEHICLE WRECK WAS REPORTED NEAR MILE MARKER 131 IN GRAHAM TOWNSHIP.

ACCUSED KILLER’S HEARING DELAYED

IN SOMERSET COUNTY COURT, THE PRELIMINARY HEARING FOR ACCUSED KILLER JONATHAN BEAL HAS BEEN CONTINUED UNTIL MARCH 8TH. THE 23-YEAR OLD IS ACCUSED OF STRANGLING HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND, JUSTINE JACKSON, THEN BURYING HER BODY IN A SHALLOW GRAVE ON HILLSIDE OUTSIDE OF MEYERSDALE. HER REMAINS WERE DISCOVERED BY A HIKER IN NOVEMBER, ABOUT 2 MONTHS AFTER SHE WENT MISSING. BEAL WAS CAPTURED 2 DAYS LATER BY U.S. MARSHALS IN LOUISIANA.

PRISON SHUT DOWN

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT AND STATE CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS WERE INVITED TO ATTEND A PUBLIC MEETING LAST NIGHT TO DISCUSS THE CLOSING OF THE STATE PRISON AT CRESSON, BUT THEY DID NOT SHOW UP. STATE SENATOR JOHN WOZNIAK SAYS OFFICIALS HAVE HANDLED THIS COMPLETELY WRONG FROM THE BEGINNING AND STATE REPRESENTATIVE FRANK BURNS SAID IT WAS UNPROFESSIONAL NOT TO GIVE ANY WARNING. INMATES ARE BEING TRANSFERRED, MANY TO S-C-I BENNER NEAR STATE COLLEGE. S-C-I GREENSBURG IS ALSO BEING SHUT DOWN.

TUITION HIKES?

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT WILL UNVEIL HIS NEW BUDGET PROPOSAL TUESDAY AND ACCORDING TO THE PATRIOT NEWS, HE’S EXPECTED TO HOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE TODAY TO ANNOUNCE THAT FUNDING WILL BE FLAT FOR THE STATE’S 4-YEAR PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES. CORBETT HAS INVITED REPRESENTATIVES FROM PENN STATE, PITT, TEMPLE, LINCOLN, AND THE 14 STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES TO JOIN HIM FOR TODAY’S EVENT AT THE STATE CAPITOL. THE PAPER ALSO SAYS CORBETT IS LIKELY TO ASK THE UNIVERSITIES TO KEEP DOWN THEIR TUITION INCREASES, BUT IS NOT GOING TO ASK THEM TO KEEP THE INCREASE WITHIN THE RATE OF INFLATION, WHICH WOULD LIMIT THEM TO A LESS THAN 2 PERCENT HIKE.

JOE PATERNO’S STATUE OUTSIDE BEAVER STADIUM WAS TAKEN DOWN 6 MONTHS AGO, 6 MONTHS AFTER HIS DEATH…NOW MORE THAN 2-THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED A FACEBOOK PETITION IN HOPES OF GETTING THE STATUE RETURNED. THE PETITION ALSO ASKS THE NCAA TO DROP THE SANCTIONS AGAINST PENN STATE. UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS HAVE REFUSED TO SAY WHERE THE STATUE IS BEING KEPT.
